What Are You Thinking?

Scientists can apparently determine this.

Don’t worry, the scientists can’t read your most fantastic or lurid imaginings. What the Caltech researchers can do is spot the flicker of activity that occurs while you contemplate moving your hand.

This research will hopefully benefit individuals with partial paralysis. Also, it tells PBF to chill out.Tags: , , ,

I went to a talk a couple weeks ago where this researcher (can’t remember who it was, sorry) unveiled research frighteningly similar to the technique from “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” He and his colleagues show people either images of faces or houses, and then later ask them to recall the images. Based on the pattern of brain activation during recall, they can identify whether the people are remembering faces or houses. Obviously this is a much simpler situation than the complex memories in “Eternal Sunshine,” but it’s still a pretty cool start.
